How Do The Effects Of Sewage Water Pollution Impact Rivers?

Public discussion of sewage pollution often centres on discharge incidents, visible contamination or short-term restrictions on river use. For water and wastewater teams, however, the assessment has to go further, carefully evaluating what entered the receiving water, under what flow conditions, for how long, and with what effect on oxygen balance, habitat condition and public use?

The answer is often complex, because sewage pollution can enter rivers through storm overflows, treatment works failures, sewer blockages, misconnections, leaking assets or poorly performing private treatment systems. Its impact is shaped by load, dilution, duration, temperature, antecedent rainfall, river flow and the ecological sensitivity of the reach. A repeated input into a low-flow tributary creates a different set of pressures from an intermittent discharge into a larger, faster-moving channel. However contamination occurs, the effects of sewage water pollution on local rivers, wildlife and communities can be harmful.

So, how does sewage pollution affect the environment?

1. Nutrient loading changes river ecology

Wastewater can introduce excess nitrogen and phosphorus into the river system. Where light, temperature and residence time support biological growth, those nutrients can stimulate algae and biofilms. The issue is not only visual growth on the water surface or riverbed. Nutrient enrichment can also alter primary production, dissolved oxygen balance and habitat condition. When this algal biomass dies and decomposes, microbial activity increases oxygen demand in the river. Lower dissolved oxygen can then place pressure on fish, invertebrates and other aquatic organisms, especially where low flows or warm conditions already restrict oxygen availability. Sensitive invertebrate communities may shift before the river shows more obvious deterioration, causing more ecosystem disruption.

2. Organic load and ammonia add further stress


Untreated or partially treated sewage can increase biochemical oxygen demand and introduce ammonia into the water. Organic matter consumes oxygen as it breaks down, and ammonia can contribute to oxygen demand during oxidation. Depending on the pH, temperature and speciation, this may present direct toxicity risks.

When you assess how sewage pollution affects the environment, however, discharge occurrence alone is not enough to minimise the risk of ammonia toxicity. Duration, load, receiving-water conditions and downstream recovery all affect the scale and persistence of any impact. The effects of sewage water pollution need to be considered in the context of the catchment area as a whole and the specific ecological risks to plants and wildlife, not treated as a single uniform outcome.

3. Solids can degrade physical habitat


Sewage pollution can also introduce fine solids and organic material that settle in slower-flowing sections, margins, pools and gravels. Deposited material can reduce habitat quality for invertebrates, affect spawning substrates and change bed condition. Persistent organic enrichment can also encourage the growth of ‘sewage fungus’ – a visible bloom of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that can develop in watercourses receiving untreated or poorly treated sewage.

It often appears as grey, white or brownish filamentous growth on stones, vegetation, channel edges or submerged surfaces, and develops where there is enough organic material for microorganisms to feed on. As that material breaks down, microbial activity can increase oxygen demand in the water, which can reduce dissolved oxygen available for fish and invertebrates. In a reach already affected by siltation, abstraction pressure or limited gradient, the additional load can compound existing physical pressures.

4. Pathogens affect public use and confidence


The community impact of sewage pollution extends beyond appearance or odour. Microbiological contamination also naturally influences decisions around bathing, paddling, angling, organised events, livestock access and public communication. For communities that use rivers and coastal waters for recreation, amenity, tourism, or local identity, repeated warnings or visible pollution can weaken confidence in the water environment. This public response sits alongside the ecological assessment. Poor wastewater control risks not only changing biological conditions within the river, but also fundamentally altering how people use the watercourse around them.
